Lars Mikkelsen3-765x1024He began his studies at the National Theatre School of Denmark at the age of 27. He graduated in 1995. In addition to his role in the drama series that was released internationally under the name The Killing, he subsequently participated in two other internationally highly acclaimed Danish dramas, Those Who Kill and Borgen III. He was also a key role in the BBC drama Sherlock in which he played the blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. He played the Russian president in the American TV show House of Cards. He was awarded an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his performance in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. This series was broadcast in the UK as Ride Upon the Storm in 2019. He has stated that he and his brother first learned English by listening to and studying the Monty Python songs.
