Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. The actress did not go on to pursue acting as a career after reaching the age of adulthood due to her parents being concerned about the adverse impact stress might be a cause of. Perry claimed she felt shy to act in high school but began doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, moved in New York in search of TV roles. Her small part was on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness led her to California in search of theater jobs. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, she was a part-time character in the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The part was offered to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the character.
